Inaugural Speech
Heather Ann Miller
July 1, 2014
At her induction as RCWP's 99th President

Thank you Rotarians for the vote of confidence. I know you celebrate that I am the first African American woman president. However, I don't want that to be my only legacy in the annals of White Plains Rotary. I want to also be known as a president who did. I can't do it by myself and so I need you.

This year is not about me, it's about us and what we are going to do to move our club forward to be the best us. It's not about being the best club, we are not in competition with anyone but ourselves. I am not trying to be the best president; I want to be the best me and give that best me to the club. I ask the same from each of you.

We are a great club, there is no mistaking that, however, we suffer from telling our story, from letting others see our light. We can do this individually by telling our stories, by bringing in new members, by being involved in community service and wearing our Rotary shirts and pins. We need to go beyond our borders to shine. Bill Fishman has signed us up for a Fun Run to benefit the Bylthedale Children's Hospital. The Port Chester Rye Brook club has invited us to their clam bake. The Scarsdale Club is inviting us to a ball game in Rockland County. Let's go out in numbers and wear our shirts so that other clubs will see that we support them. We are all Rotarians and the mission is the same.

For our club, we have a number of activities lined up. We are doing some of them during our regular Tuesday meetings. We will celebrate the members of our 50 year club, Ira Bernstein and John Ramsdell. We will have a family day to celebrate all of us and our families. We will also celebrate those who are a part of the Rotary District and Rotary International.

There are other activities already in the planning stages initiated by members. Carol Greenburg and the RCU are taking on a Fine Dining event for the homeless. Lisa Romano along with the Interact Club will be doing a Family Pet Day. The fundraising committee led by Paul Bronzo is already working. I am excited by the energy.

I need all of you to get involved with the activities to End Polio Now. President Norm informed me that October 24th is World Polio Day and recommended that I get the Mayor to declare October 24th as World Polio Day. Done. Thanks Norm. I have asked other clubs to do the same in their communities. We are also having a Walk/Run to End Polio Now, venue to be determined on October 26th. This will be a district wide activity initiated by our club.

I have a young lady here today, Shirley Joseph, who will help to start a Rotaract Club at Berkeley College or in the community. It is my hope to get more youth involvement. RYLA, Interact and Rotaract serve as feeders to Rotary. I need your involvement in our intergenerational work with these young people.

Now how did I get here. I am going back 9 years ago to give thanks to some of you who touched me significantly.

To Charlie Booth from whom I learned about Rotary and to Bruce Golden for nominating me...

To Evan Delman and the Ecuador crew, David, Jonathan and Carolyn who made Rotary relevant to me ..to Paul Bronzo who sat with me when he noticed, I a new member was sitting alone (the little things)...Harriet for inviting me to her sports club... Fred for engaging me in conversations...Brian for his encouragement...Rich for sharing his Jamaican Scotch Bonnet peppers...To the ladies of RCU, Jo, Carol, Ann, Rosa, Lena for including me in their fold even though I still don't know what RCU means and prefer to keep it that way...

To Ralph Penny and the Nominating Committee which selected me even though I said no at first and to my daughter, Jo-Ann Enwezor, for encouraging me to accept...

To the 2014-2015 Board of Directors...To those who will serve as committee chairs, committee members and in other capacities...To all of you who will bring in new members, participate in service projects and fundraising projects, increase your Foundation giving and have your own personal goals for Rotary...

To Norm Szymanski and the the past presidents Ira Bernstein and the Halo Club, in whose footsteps I will follow and to whom I will call on for advice...

To Bill Fishman and George Kontogiannis with whom I have been meeting regularly to plan my year and theirs so there will be continuity, and for accepting key roles even in the midst of preparing for their own presidencies...

To Kurt Kannemeyer who accompanied to Australia (at his own expense), served as my guide since I am so directionally challenged, and who attended specific workshops to help to make our programs for youth and the club, in general, be the best they can be...

To the staff and Board of Directors of the Thomas H. Slater Center who will have to take on additional roles to let me do this...

To Bruce Handler for designing the program...The Crowne Plaza and staff for today and many tomorrows...Andy Morzello who is just amazing in his preparation and presentation...

To those who stay on the job: Ted, Paul, Harry.

To Lisa for all you will do - my right hand, thanks for describing it in that way..

To the Consul General of Jamaica, who said yes, no questions asked...

To all of you here today, Rotarians, guests, family and friends...

I can't thank you enough.
